# Home blood pressure checks: simple, steady and comparable

A home blood pressure log is most useful when it shows a pattern over time—not when it captures one “perfect” result. **Use a consistent time and position, and record every reading honestly** so that the information is easier to discuss with a healthcare professional.

> Blood pressure can change with activity, stress, caffeine and body position. Sit quietly for a few minutes before starting.

## Before you begin

- Avoid checking immediately after exercise, smoking or a caffeinated drink.
- Sit with your back supported, feet flat and legs uncrossed.
- Place the cuff on bare upper-arm skin and support the arm near heart level.

## Record a reading in three steps

1. Sit quietly for at least five minutes and do not talk during the measurement.[^1]
2. Follow the monitor’s instructions; if another reading is needed, pause briefly before repeating it.
3. Keep every result and note the time, medicine timing and how you felt.

## How should you view the results?

Look at the overall pattern across several days rather than one isolated number. Do not diagnose yourself or stop, increase or borrow medication based only on a home reading. Compare your log with the individual plan given by your clinician.

**If an unusual reading occurs with chest pain, difficulty breathing, sudden weakness, confusion or a severe headache, seek urgent medical help immediately.**
